Every parent wants the best for their child’s health—and kids are often more sensitive than adults when it comes to chemical exposure. Many commercial toothpaste brands are loaded with artificial additives, sweeteners, and harsh chemicals that may not be the safest option for little ones. If you’d like to avoid unnecessary risks, making your own DIY natural toothpaste for kids can be a great solution.
I’ve always enjoyed experimenting with homemade beauty and personal care products. One day, while shopping for toothpaste at the supermarket, I realized how much time I was spending just reading labels. Choosing toothpaste for kids took even longer because I wanted to be extra careful. That’s when I decided: why not create my own natural version?
Why Choose Natural Toothpaste for Kids?
Unlike many store-bought alternatives, homemade natural toothpaste contains no toxic ingredients, no unnecessary whiteners, and nothing that could damage developing teeth. Every ingredient is safe, gentle, and easy to source from your local market or online.
Here’s what makes this recipe special:
Coconut Oil – Known for its antibacterial, cleansing, and mild whitening properties, coconut oil is my go-to base. It’s versatile, natural, and perfectly safe for both adults and children.
Xylitol – This natural sweetener not only improves the taste but also gives the toothpaste the right consistency. Best of all, it’s safe for kids and doesn’t harm the body.
How to Make It
Once you’ve gathered your ingredients, making this toothpaste only takes a few minutes. The result is a smooth, creamy, and completely natural toothpaste that your kids will love—and you’ll feel confident knowing exactly what’s in it.
Natural Toothpaste for Kids Ingredients
1 tea spoon of Xylitol
2 tea spoons of Coconut oil
3 drops of Orange essential oil
How to Make Best Natural Toothpaste for Kids
Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl.
Transfer this mixture into a clean container.
Your creamy toothpaste safe for kids is ready.
This homemade and natural toothpaste for kids is amazing. You can use
it just like a normal toothpaste. Just put on your toothbrush and brush
your teeth normally. Then, rinse your mouth and you are done. What is
more, when you use this toothpaste regularly, your teeth will look even
whiter.
Also, you can change orange essential oil with other options like
peppermint essential oil. I prepared this toothpaste recipe for kids.
So, I used orange essential oil as this oil has sweeter taste. But if
you are going to make the toothpaste for yourself, peppermint essential
oil can be a good alternative. Peppermint essential oil will give you
the freshness you are looking for.
Fever is a normal response of the immune system to the bacterial or viral infection. The body temperature of a healthy baby should be 97 – 100.4˚ F (36 – 38˚C).
If the body temperature of the newborn babies (up to 3 months) rises above 100.4˚F, it’s best to consult pediatrician immediately.
If the body temperature of infants (between 3 – 6 months) rises above 101˚F, then consult your doctor.
For babies (above 6 months) having body temperature over 103˚F then make an immediate consultation with a pediatrician.
However, there is no worse feeling to a mom when their infant gets sick with the fever but don’t worry parents, as there are many natural ways that help to deal with your baby’s fever.
Home Remedies for Reducing Fever in Babies:
Here are some best ways that help you to manage or reduce your baby’s
fever. Let’s have a look at these natural remedies for treating fever
in babies.
Remedy – 1: (Cold Compress)
Whenever the baby develops a fever, you have to apply a cold compress
as a first aid to reduce the fever. Placing the wet washcloth will help
to draw the fever out, which in turn reduces the temperature to cure
fever.
Pour cool tap water in the bowl and soak a clean washcloth in this water.
Wring out to remove excess water and place this wet cloth on your baby’s forehead.
Leave it for few minutes and when once the cloth warms then remove it.
Repeat the same process for few times a day till you’re baby fever has gone completely.
Note: Never ever use very cold or ice water for this compress, as it raises some internal body temperature and worsens the fever.
Remedy – 2: (Breast Milk)
Breast milk will offer a unique balance of nutrients that are
essential to strengthen the baby’s immune system and thereby fights
against the fever causing infections. So, it’s compulsory to offer your
baby younger than 6 months old.
Breastfeed your baby frequently and be sure to keep the baby upright
while breastfeeding which helps to keep the baby more comfortable
during feeding.
Due to any reason, if your baby refuses nursing then pump out the breast milk and try to feed them using a bottle or a spoon.
Breast milk can be easily digested and makes your baby stay hydrated.
Continue offering breast milk for few times a day for keeping your baby healthy.
Remedy – 3: (Lukewarm Bath)
Giving lukewarm bath to your baby will help them to relax and
regulate their body temperature. It also helps the baby to sleep better
and thereby results in faster recovery.
Fill your baby’s bathtub with lukewarm water.
Give your baby (older than 6 months) a lukewarm bath for few times a day.
For babies (younger than 6 months), give them a lukewarm sponge bath
by simply soaking a sponge or cloth in lukewarm water and squeeze to
remove excess water. Use it to clean your baby’s body.
Dry your baby immediately and dress them to prevent any chills or shivering.
Continue doing the same process regularly till your baby gets relief from fever.
Note: Also, avoid using very hot or cold water for your baby’s bath, as it results in the rise of internal body temperature.
Remedy – 4: (Foot Massage)
Massaging your baby’s feet with some warm natural oil helps to calm
down the baby’s body temperature and also promotes better sleep to give a
quick recovery.
Apply some lukewarm olive oil on the soles of your baby’s feet.
Massage gently with mild pressure on their soles with your thumbs for a couple of minutes.
Complete the massaging process by covering the whole foot.
Repeat the same process for regularly with utmost care to regulate your baby’s body temperature.
Remedy – 5: (Apple Cider Vinegar)
Apple cider vinegar (ACV) helps a lot in drawing out the heat from
your body and thereby reducing the body temperature. But remember to use
raw, unfiltered and unpasteurized ACV and also use it for babies 1 year
or older.
Mix 1/4 cup of ACV in 2 large bowl of lukewarm water.
Soak a clean washcloth in this water and wring out to clear excess water.
Then use this damp cloth to have a sponge bath to your baby.
Do the same process for 2 – 3 times daily till your baby’s fever has dropped completely.
Remedy – 6: (Basil)
Basil helps babies (above 1-year old) to get rid of fever, as this
herb reduces the body heat and calm down your baby. It also works as
natural immune booster and antibiotic that prevents your baby from
infections.
Place a handful of basil leaves in 2 cups of water and boil it for few minutes till the quantity reduced to half.
Then add some sugar and stir well.
Give this mix to your baby for few times daily.
Note: Or if you’re baby is able to chew tender basil
leaves then give it to her or his, after washing them thoroughly. Make
them chew the basil leaves at regular intervals.
Tips and Precautions:
If your baby exhibits other symptoms like a cough, cold, diarrhea,
vomiting, loss of appetite, dehydration, rashes on the skin, etc. then
it’s must consult a doctor for proper diagnose and treatment.
It’s always recommended to monitor your baby’s temperature
regularly. Also, note the fluctuations in your baby’s temperature in a
notepad to help your doctor for assessing the changes in your body’s
temperature.
Give your baby more fluids, water, and chilled foods which help to
cool down the body and prevents dehydration. Also, give your baby oral
rehydration solutions with lukewarm water, ice pops, cold milk, chilled
yogurt, fruit juice, etc. to replenish fluids and electrolytes.
It’s must to keep your baby in cool (or indoor) places. Be sure that
the room temperature should not be too cold or too hot (in between 70 –
74˚F), so change the setting of your fan or AC or heater accordingly.
Also, be careful while dressing your infants. It should be
comfortable with lightweight clothing and if needed, you can use a light
blanket while your baby is sleeping but won’t bundle up with layers of
clothes or extra blankets for your baby.
Never ever leave you little one with a fever alone at any point of
time. Also, be sure that your kid has to urinate at least once in 4
hours and also the urine should be a light colored.
Don’t force your baby to consume a solid food but you can feed them
with soft and low fiber foods (crackers, bread, refined hot cereals or
cream of wheat) to get relief from fever.
It’s always suggested to give the recommended dosage of medication
(use a measuring device) and never give more than that quantity.
Also, make sure to check with your pediatrician before using any medication or treatment at home for treating fever.

A famous 1990 study was
the first to differentiate toddlers’ vocabulary performance according
to their socioeconomic background. Rich families were more likely to
spend more time with toddlers, thus feeding them more complex words.
Poor families, on the other hand, had a more basic vocabulary to pass
on.
However, a 2018 study has now shed a new light over the subject by concluding that the important thing is not to talk to toddlers, but rather talking with toddlers.
A study shows that talking with toddlers can increase their IQ
The importance of talking to toddlers to stimulate their vocabulary
was already well-known, but a 2018 study has come to show that talking
with toddlers is as or even more important.
The researchers analyzed toddlers between 18 and 36 months and
calculated the rate of adult-toddler conversations and the amount of
vocabulary used based on daylong audio recordings. 10 years later, they
met the same children to evaluate their cognitive development and the
results were clear.
The children who had maintained more conversations with adults as toddlers presented a 14% to 27% higher IQ
in the categories of verbal comprehension, and receptive and/or
expressive vocabulary than those we were simple receptors of vocabulary.
According to the researchers, a conversation implies that the child has to create and produce language.
They have to put words, meanings and structures together, which
stimulates areas of the brain that simply listening to someone talk
doesn’t.
Even if the toddler cannot yet speak clearly, the effort to try to
communicate will eventually result in a better and faster development of
their mental capabilities.
Tips to boost your child’s IQ
The evaluation of someone’s IQ covers several areas. For a child,
these focus on 7 points: language, information, memory, math, spatial,
thinking and motor skills.
If you want to boost your child’s IQ these are the areas you should
be focusing on. They are the primary base of development for your baby
and will impact on their learning capabilities through their life.
Reading to your child doesn’t fall into the category of talking with toddlers but it’s not a simple act of reception.
Not only will you be increasing their vocabulary, you will also be stimulating their imagination, their time perception and the relation between cause and consequence as they need to follow what happens to each character.
You can even take the opportunity to take up other areas that not vocabulary only.
Ask your child to repeat the story after you finished to practice their
memory, for instance. Use the book drawings to ask other developing
questions too: How many trees do you see in this picture? What color is
this house?
If you’re really into it, you can even ask your child which part of
the book they would change, ask them why and request a retelling of
their own. This will stimulate their memory, imagination and creativity
but also their communication skills and vocabulary.
Introduce math early on
Mathematics is the boogie man of many children and adults alike. If
you want to improve your child’s IQ then you need to make him
comfortable around numbers and basic math processes.
Math is a subject that needs to be built up. You can’t learn complex functions if you don’t understand the basis behind 2+2=1. If
you introduce them early on to your child it will become a natural
rational thinking and not something he needs to consciously make an
effort to think about.
Start with simple things. For example, “Do you want one or two
candies?”, “If you have 4 french fries and eat 2, how many do you have
left?” Even without realizing it, you will be talking with toddlers by
doing this. You ask and expect an answer from them, so you are joining
two learning processes in one.
These are simple processes and very easily accompanied by a visual
cue, but they can make a big difference later in your child’s life.
Take your baby outside and let him experience the world. Let the
toddler feel the rough texture of sand in their hands, smell a flower or
destroy it to see what it is like inside.
Physical touch is very stimulating for young children when their brains are still developing. Just keep around in case they try to experience it with their mouths.
Let the tots play
If possible, let your child play with other children of the same age from early on.
Let them experience the structures and dynamics of social
interactions and learn how to manage them, how it is like to make
friends, how it is like to have an argument with a peer.
Keep talking to your child
Talking with toddlers is great but it also requires attention on your
part, which can make it hard to do it for long periods of time and very
often.
However, even when you’re running short on time or have to
focus on other activities you should keep talking to your child about
everything, even the most random things.
If you’re about to cook, start describing to your child each step
you’re taking as if you were in a cooking show. When you hear a bird
sing, tell the toddler to pay attention and explain the sound is coming
from a bird, describe what a bird is, what they eat, what they do, etc.
You will be basically feeding your child with new vocabulary but also with important and educational information.
Puzzles, Lego, building blocks, these sort of toys explore the child’s creativity and imaginal but also their spatial skills and fine-motor skills.
They have to use their brains to solve the puzzles or create new
shapes and toys with the blocks and Lego. They will also need to improve
their fine skills, working with their fingers to build and destroy
their creations.
Should you teach them how to read?
Why not? If you’re willing to try and have the patience to do it, then go for it.
Just keep in mind that you will be dealing with a toddler whose brain
is still developing. You can’t be as demanding or hard on them as you
are with a pre-school child, for instance.
There are several methods and techniques to teach young children how
to read. When choosing one, think primarily of your child and which
technique would be more interesting or suitable for them.
Parents are usually worried about their children when they start going to school, to kindergarten, or when they visit some after-school program, especially at this time of the year, as various infectious childhood illness sweeps through the rooms.
In most cases, children get their inoculations early on to prevent old-fashioned diseases such as mumps and rubella which led to huge swathes of children every year.
Nowadays, there is even an annual flu shot which helps children to prevent the winter’s most contagious illnesses.
Yet, some diseases are more difficult to prevent, such as the hand-foot-and-mouth disease. More than 200,000 Americans suffer from this disease every year.
According to the prediction of the experts at the West Central Health District in Georgia, this year might be a record-breaking year for the disease, and it is already causing outbreaks among school children and college students.
HFMD, or the hand-foot-and-mouth disease, is a common disease which affects hundreds of thousands of people annually. It is a highly contagious ailment and can be spread extremely easily, even with a kiss, a handshake, mucus or saliva, or just being with a person in the same room. Due to this, it is also widespread in kindergartens and pre-schools, where kids are often covered in snot and spit.
Additionally, college students often share their drinks or meals, and they are often overtired, lack sleep, and have a weak immune system.
The elderly, as well as all people with a weak immunity, are also prone to it, especially if they live in a nursing home. Yet, even the healthiest people cannot be completely sure that they are protected, as it all depends on the kinds of germs on is exposed to.
The symptoms are not life-threatening or intense, but they are quite unpleasant.
The symptoms are flu-like symptoms, such as fever and sore throat, as well as the characteristic itchy red spots that appear on the mouth, hands, and feet.
The sores might also appear on the genitals and the legs. In most cases, the virus clears up on its own after a week or two.
However, if this disease runs in the family, you should visit your doctor. Since it is contagious, you need to stay home in order to prevent it from spreading to others.
This disease causes mild symptoms, but its side-effects can be severe, especially in aged people or individuals with weakened immune systems.
HFMD might also cause serious brain infections such as meningitis and encephalitis. Moreover, if the symptoms are not treated for a few weeks, children might lose some of their fingernails or toenails.
The CDC reports that the HFMD outbreaks are not common in the USA, but this year might be different.
Namely, a huge outbreak has been sweeping through Georgia, and could affect South Eastern US, and even other regions of the country.
Therefore, if you live in these areas, you should be extremely vigilant about your hygiene habits. You should wash the hands after leaving the bathroom and before meals.
The children should stay at home if you suspect that they have HFMD. If you by any chance come into contact with the illness, you should rest and drink lots of fluids, even if the sores cause a slight pain in the throat.
The following video will provide additional information on this disease:
Taking care of your newborn baby may be one of the most important jobs you will ever do. This means that your infant needs your constant attention and care, thus health problems will be avoided.
This also means that you have to keep the baby safe from outer influences, and as much as you want your friends and relatives to see the baby, they may bring in infections and bacteria that can harm him.
Bacteria and infections can be found everywhere, from homes to playgrounds, so you need to be extra attentive and careful when you bring your baby in such environments.
When you are taking care of your baby you really need to look out for people with colds, coughs, sneezing and sinus problems- all these things can impair your baby’s health.
The same goes for you- if you are feeling sick, steer clear from other people’s babies.
To confirm how dangerous a contact with a baby is, here is a true story from UK mum, Claire Henderson and her newborn daughter Brooke. When Claire’s baby was kissed on the mouth, the baby developed the herpes virus which spread on her mouth, cheeks and chin.
This forced Claire to spend 5 days in the hospital, fearing for her baby’s wellbeing.
Fortunately, the baby healed well. In case you did not know, the herpes virus can be deadly for babies younger than 3 months, and such an example was discovered in Queensland. Baby Eloise Lampton got in touch with the virus and unfortunately could not survive it, since she was only several days old.
After what happened to her baby girl, Claire Henderson wrote on social media: “The moral of the story is DO NOT let anyone kiss your newborn’s mouth, even if they don’t look like they have a cold sore”
Babies are so fragile and gentle and their health needs constant monitoring, so be aware of potential dangers.
Also, babies have not build immune system for six weeks upon birth, and almost anything can harm them. Just a simple runny nose and cold can be fatal for your baby, so take proper care of him/her.
It is not about being paranoid or a hypochondriac, it is just being a dedicated parent that has her baby’s needs and health as priority.
And there is no need of feeling guilty- we all do what we think is best for our children. So, until your baby is able to adapt to a certain surrounding properly, you are in charge of what you expose him/ her to.
Nothing is more valuable than life, and life is measured from day one onwards.
If you have kids, than you have probably thought of every possible
threat that may risk your baby’s health. For most parents, chocking is
the biggest fear of them all. But, if you are able to identify the very
first signs of chocking, you will most certainly solve the problem
without panicking.
Risks of chocking It is
important to understand which foods put your child at a risk for
chocking. Be careful when feeding your child with grapes, hot dogs,
blueberries, and other similarly-sized foods. Here is a good tip for
you. You can chop the food for your child into bite-size pieces and
make things a lot easier. In this way it will be easy for the food to
find its way past the airways without causing any additional trouble. Infants
still learn how to eat their food, and they run at the highest risk of
chocking. This happens because they still do not know the importance of
chewing and the proper amount of food they can chew.
Signs of chocking Coughing,
shortness of breath, red face and going silent are common signs of
chocking. If your child coughs and you can notice some air that still
gets through, do not anything at the moment. If your child can clear it
up on its own, you do not have to do any potentially dangerous
interventions. But, if its airway is completely blocked, remain calm and do anything that is in your power to save your child.
Take these steps to save your child from choking Read
the following steps carefully and you can even practice them on a doll.
In this way you will be prepared to act appropriately when needed.
Stay calm. Seeing your beloved child chocking is a terrifying sight,
but try to understand that it is already scared. If you remain calm,
your child will not panic, too.
Take your child out of its seat.
Turn it, and make sure it faces the floor.
Place your child on your thigh, and allow its mouth to hang free over the edge of your knee.
Deliver five back blows between its shoulder blades using the heel of your hand.
This step may be just enough to dislodge any food pieces. If that
does not happen, turn your child around and perform a finger sweep along
the opening to its throat in order to catch any offending chunk.
If your baby is still chocking, lay it on the back, and use both
your middle and pointing finger to perform five chest thrusts along its
sternum.
Repeat the same technique up to two more times.
If the chocking continue after you have done three cycles of back
blows and chest thrusts, make sure you call an emergency service,
because you may not clear the blockage without any additional help.
Chocking is something scary to see, especially when it is happening
to your child, but it is something you can solve immediately. Children
often gag on their food at certain point in their live – that is a part
of their process on learning how to chew their food. Follow these handy
steps and you will never experience a problem.
When the body is unable to produce enough insulin, a person may
develop diabetes. When a woman is pregnant her body may stop producing
enough insulin. This results in the pregnant woman developing
gestational diabetes.
Complications of Gestational Diabetes
For women with gestational diabetes there are some complications that
may develop if she does not control her blood sugar levels. One of the
most common side effects of gestational diabetes is babies that are
larger in size.
Once the baby is born he/she may have low blood sugar and will need
to be monitored during the first few days after birth. Premature births,
preeclampsia, as well as other health related issues may arise as well.
How Diabetes May Affect a Child’s Brain
There are now studies that show how diabetes may affect children
later in life. Women that do not control their blood sugar during
pregnancy may affect the child’s memory and the damage that is done may
not be reversible.
An ongoing study conducted by the University of Minnesota has shown
that children born to diabetic mothers have consistent issues with their
memory. The researchers believe that this may be caused by damage to
the hippocampus which develops during the final trimester of pregnancy.
There is also new information being released that shows that pregnant
women who develop gestational diabetes are more likely to have a child
diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder). However, this study does
not mean that autism is common for children that are born to women who
develop gestational diabetes.
In addition, there have been findings that show that when women have
had good control over their diabetes while pregnant tend to have
children who perform as well in school as their peers or even better.
Women who did not have good control over their diabetes tend to have
children who perform poorly in school and get lower grades when compared
to those children who had mothers who did not have diabetes.
Importance of Controlling Diabetes During Pregnancy
These studies show the importance of controlling blood sugar levels
during pregnancy. Diabetes control before and during pregnancy will
lower the risk of birth defects, preterm delivery, preeclampsia, low
blood sugar for the newborn, and having babies with a larger birth
weight.
The most important findings of these studies are that women who are
pregnant need to be educated on controlling their blood sugar levels.
Pregnant women who receive appropriate education on the subject are more
likely to follow the recommended diet and exercise program, which will
help keep their blood sugar levels in check.
Women who do not receive education on the disease and how to control
it are more likely to not follow an appropriate diet, which can result
in many health issues not only for themselves, but for their babies as
well.
Jennifer Amba is a single mom from Canada, and her story raises the general awareness of heatstroke. Her three-year-old toddler suffered a heatstroke in the bedroom while taking a nap.
The mom called an ambulance, and had to wait 20 minutes. Jennifer wasn’t even aware of the problem her daughter had. She didn’t notice that the bedroom is too hot. When she reached for the toddler, the girl was soaked in sweat, unresponsive and her face was red.
There was no air conditioning and the fan wasn’t on. The window was open, and the blinds were closed.
Do you know that over 650 Americans die from heat-related disease? Each of these cases can be prevented. You can suffer a heat-stroke everywhere – even when you spend the day in shadows.
What is a heatstroke?
It’s a condition in which body temperature goes as high as 104 degrees Fahrenheit, and the body is unable to bring it down.
The body has a natural cooling system and regulates its temperature
on its own. But, if you spend your day exposed to constant heat and
ignore your body’s need of water, you will be dehydrated, and the body
won’t be able to cool itself.
Heat exhaustion coms first, and it’s followed by headache, fatigue,
nausea and muscle cramps. If your temperature doesn’t go down, you are
likely to suffer a heatstroke.
When does this happen?
A heatstroke happens when you are exposed to heat, usually after intense physical workout or outdoor activity.
It may also happen if you don’t wear proper clothes that allows your
body to sweat. Alcohol interferes with your body’s ability to balance
its temperature which may cause additional problem.
Children and babies have a higher risk of suffering a heatstroke as
their body is unable to regulate their temperature. It’s also common in
people with existing medical problem.
Symptoms
Look for early symptoms like goose bumps or tingling skin, a dull headache, and vomiting.
Sufferers are confused and lethargic. Your heart is strained, and you
may sweat a lot. Yes, your body is dehydrated, but you may still sweat
as confirmed by research.
Heatstroke causes difficulty breathing, a rapid pulse,
disorientation, and flushed skin. It may cause organ damage and even
death. Heatstroke may cause serious damage to your brain, lungs, liver
and kidneys.
Identify heatstroke
Heatstroke shouldn’t be taken lightly as it’s an emergency. Call an ambulance and go to the hospital as soon as possible.
Watch for any of the symptoms we have listed above, and don’t focus on sweating only.
Here are some extra tips:
Take the person to a cool area
Remove any unnecessary layers of clothes
Turn fans on or wet the person’s skin with water
Use icepacks if the sufferer is an elderly, child, chronically ill
or someone who had done strenuous workout. Place the icepacks on the
armpits, neck, back and groin (blood vessels are mostly concentrated
here)
Immerse the person in cool water
Don’t forget the pets!
Heat may hurt animals, too. Most animals have furry coat, and may
overheat easily. They usually deal with difficulty breathing, droll, and
collapse. If you notice these symptoms, turn the fan on and wrap the
pet with wet towel. Be careful, you shouldn’t use cold water, because
animals cool down fast.
Keep your pets in shade and avoid direct sunlight. Give them a lot of
fresh water. If your pet has a heatstroke, call a veterinarian!
Prevent heatstroke
It’s an emergency! Here’s how to prevent it:
Drink a lot of water
Don’t wear too much clothes and opt for light and loose clothing
Avoid alcohol
Wear sunglasses and sunscreen
Don’t leave anyone in your parked car because a heatstroke may happen even when temperatures are 70 degrees Fahrenheit
If you don’t know how to keep your water intake in normal levels, add
some lemon juice to your water bottle and enjoy the citrusy hint. Lemon
water is incredibly healthy and refreshing. If you have a sweet tooth,
add some honey to it. Enjoy your favorite drink!
