Turmeric is a yellow colored herb that removes all the yellowness in your teeth and whitens it up. Let’s have a look on how does turmeric work and how to use turmeric to whiten teeth.
Is Turmeric good for Teeth Whitening?

How to use Turmeric for Teeth Whitening:
Turmeric is one best remedy that widely used to whiten teeth. It is used alone or in combination with some other natural ingredients to get rid of yellow teeth.
Method – 1: (Turmeric)
This is a simple but most effective way of using turmeric for whitening teeth.
Steps to be followed…
- Add enough of water in 1/2 teaspoon of organic turmeric powder.
- Stir well to make it a fine paste and use it as your toothpaste.
- Brush your teeth thoroughly and let it sit for a minute or two.
- After that, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water till the yellow stains have been completely removed from the mouth.
- Repeat the same process regularly until you get rid of the yellow discoloration on your teeth.
Note:
- Or mix 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder to 1/2 glass of water and use this mix regularly as your mouthwash to whiten your teeth.
- Or simply sprinkle some turmeric powder into your regularly used toothpaste and use it brush your teeth.
- Also, chewing a bite – size piece of organic turmeric root for 2 – 5 minutes will also beneficial for whitening your teeth. Be sure to spit out and rinse it thoroughly with water.
- Alternatively, wet your toothbrush and dip it in 1/8 teaspoon of organic turmeric powder. Use it as your tooth powder and brush your teeth with it and let it sit on your teeth for 3 – 5 minutes. Spit out and rinse your mouth thoroughly.
Method – 2: (Turmeric Toothpaste)
Both baking soda and turmeric has abrasive properties that help to whiten your teeth and overcome the gum infections. Coconut oil removes the bacteria, plaque buildup and gingivitis. This toothpaste is natural and fluoride free.
Steps to be followed…
- Add 2 tablespoons of organic coconut oil and 2 teaspoons of baking soda in 4 tablespoons of organic turmeric powder.
- Stir well to make it fine toothpaste and keep it in a cool place to get proper solid paste form.
- Then put a generous amount of this paste on the toothbrush and brush for 2 minutes.
- Store the remaining in a closed glass container for further usage.
- Rinse your mouth well with water till the yellow stains (caused by turmeric) has been completely removed.
- Continue brushing your teeth regularly for once a week to get teeth whitening.
- Remember that occasional usage of this paste is better than daily usage, as it causes irritation on the soft gum tissue and thus exacerbates gum disease.
Note: For best results, do some coconut oil pulling to get rid of germs and place a protective layer over your teeth.
Method – 3: (Turmeric with Coconut Oil and Peppermint Oil)
Turmeric acts as antioxidant and antimicrobial that treats common dental problems. Coconut oil has antibacterial that fight against the bacteria or plaque causing oral problems. Peppermint oil will refresh your mouth and works as your mouthwash. This process helps not only to whiten the teeth but also reverse the gum diseases.
Steps to be followed…
- Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and 2 – 3 drops of peppermint essential oil in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
- Stir well to make it a fine paste and use it as your toothpaste.
- Brush your teeth as normal with it and rinse off thoroughly.
- Repeat the same process regularly till you attained the best results of whitening your teeth.
Note: Or else, mix 1/8 teaspoon of melted coconut oil in 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder to make a paste. Use it to brush your teeth and rinse off after 3 – 5 minutes thoroughly and brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste.
Tips and Precautions:
- Turmeric is bright yellow colored spice and it will stain almost anything that comes into contact with it (mostly the skin and clothes). It immediately strains your toothbrush and also turns your teeth yellow while brushing, so rinse your mouth thoroughly with water to get rid of this problem.
- We recommended you to consult your dentist before using turmeric for teeth to know the potential risks, benefits and also to ensure that your mouth is in good health condition to use it.
- Apart from using turmeric, you have to go for a regular checkup and cleaning, brush twice daily for 2 minutes, floss every day, avoid the foods and drinks that cause staining of teeth and follow best at-home oral hygiene routine to make your teeth strong and white.
- Choose the toothpaste that is free from harmful chemicals like sodium lauryl sulfate, fluoride, triclosan, artificial sweeteners, diethanolamine, and propylene glycol which damage your teeth rather than protecting.
